Shortly before his death, the philosopher Eugene Fleischmann named as his sole heir Professor Eric de Dampierre, founder of the Société d’ethnologie. Dampierre transferred the bequest to the Société d’ethnologie, with the task of ensuring the annual allocation of a fellowship in the humanities and social sciences (anthropology, comparative sociology, prehistory, archaeology, epistemology) and to hold periodic public lectures in these disciplines.
The Société d’ethnologie has administered the Eugene Fleischmann bequest since 1996. By the terms of the will, the revenues of the fund are dedicated to the payment of scholarships and grants to support graduate students or post-doctoral researchers in anthropology, ethnomusicology, anthropology prehistoric, comparative epistemology and sociology.
The Eugene Fleischmann fellowship, which currently stands at € 8,000, is allocated every year. Depending on the availability of resources and the nature of the research project, the jury may increase the amount of the award. It may also provide other candidates with a research allowance of a lower amount.
Candidates for the scholarship or research grants are selected independently of age and nationality, but must complete assignments in one of the major European languages.
Appointed for three years by the General Assembly of the Société d’ethnologie, an international multidisciplinary panel of five experts examine candidates’ proposals and submit their evaluation and ranking to the Society’s board.
